What is Japanese Knotweed?
This resilient perennial, with tall and dense stems, grows quickly on most terrains. Every year, the stem growth is renewed from the stout. Its rooting systems penetrate deeply and can easily reproduce even with small parts.
The weed was introduced from Japan in 1825 as an ornamental plant. Although it does have aesthetic value, its tendency to overrun native plants and other garden plants has become an issue.
If you’re planning to get a loan or a mortgage against a property that has Japanese knotweed, you may have a hard time getting approval. The weed can, at times, also damage the property because its rooting system may penetrate even concrete.
Legislation Regarding Japanese Knotweed
According to the provisions within the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, causing the growth of Japanese Knotweed in the wild is an offence.
Also, an amendment to the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime, and Policing Act of 2014, includes the Japanese Knotweed and other non-native, but invasive plants in their list.
Having Japanese knotweed on your property is not only harmful for your other plants, it is also a potential liability for you.
Chemical Control
The gradual application of strong herbicide over a period of time is the most effective way to remove Japanese knotweed. This requires the right tools with the right experience to successfully do. Retail weed killers often fail because they take a long while before showing results.
Our specialists have a considered approach and a carefully made bespoke plan for the properties we service. We use specialist stem injection equipment and monitor the site periodically.

Do I have Japanese Knotweed?
The best time to spot Japanese knotweed is during mid-summer and early autumn. The key distinguishing features are the red speckled stems and reddish shoots with a zig-zag growth pattern. The large broad leaves have a distinct flat base which is perpendicular to the petiole (leaf stem).
PCA accredited Japanese Knotweed contractors
Japanese knotweed identification is not always easy. If you are still unsure whether you have a case of Japanese knotweed on your property please send us a photograph for a free assessment, ideally including a close-up of some leaves if possible, to enquiries@dtetrees.co.uk. If you do have knotweed, then one of our consultants would be happy to help. In the meantime, avoid cutting or pulling up the plant where possible as it has a negligible effect on the plant and makes successful treatment more difficult.
