FAQs
-
Tree surgery is best carried out during the dormant season, roughly November to February. Trees are not actively growing during this period, so pruning and felling cause less stress and encourage healthy growth in spring. It is also the safest window for avoiding disturbance to nesting birds and wildlife.
That said, certain tree work such as hedge cutting, hedge trimming and crown thinning can be done at other times of the year provided no active nests are present. Emergency tree removal following storm damage is something we carry out year-round. If you are unsure about timing, contact us and we will be happy to offer expert advice.
-
It depends on whether the tree is protected. If a tree preservation order (TPO) is in place, you must apply to the local planning authority for consent before any felling or pruning. Trees within a conservation area also require six weeks' written notice to the council. Fines for unauthorised removal can reach £20,000.
Construction projects near trees may also come with additional planning conditions. At Down to Earth Trees, we regularly handle TPO applications for both domestic and commercial clients across the Oxted area and the surrounding villages such as Hurst Green. We can manage the process from the initial site visit through to completed works.

Costs vary depending on the type and scale of the job. Crown reduction or complete pruning of a single garden tree can start from around £250 to £500, while larger tree removal or felling of mature specimens may range from £1,000 to £3,000. Stump grinding is typically quoted separately, starting from around £75 to £150 per stump.
We provide a free quotation following a site visit, so there are no surprises. Every job is assessed according to your specific requirements, including the overall size of the tree, access, equipment needed and safe removal of waste. Contact us for a free consultation and we will arrange to visit at a convenient time.

It depends on the size of the tree, the type of work and how accessible your outdoor space is. A straightforward crown reduction or hedge cutting job can often be completed in half a day, while larger felling operations involving multiple trees may take a full day or longer.
Our tree specialists work efficiently without cutting corners on safety. We carry the right equipment for every job, from compact stump grinders for tight gardens to large crane trucks for complex tree removal. If you need a clearer idea of timescales, we are happy to discuss this during your consultation.

A professional tree surgeon should hold relevant qualifications such as City and Guilds NPTC certificates in chainsaw use, tree climbing and felling. They should also be fully insured and ideally hold Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor status, which requires ongoing assessment of work standards and safety practices to a high standard.
At Down to Earth Trees, all our fully qualified arborists are trained to the highest level, and we are one of the longest-established Approved Contractors in the country (Licence No: AC2052). We also hold ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditations, meaning we carry out every job to exacting quality and eco-friendly standards.

You do have the right to cut back branches that overhang your property, but only up to the boundary line. You must not enter your neighbour's land, and if the tree is subject to a tree preservation order or sits within a conservation area, you will still need permission from the local planning authority before touching it.
We would always recommend speaking to your neighbour first. Professional tree surgery ensures pruning is done correctly without harming the tree or affecting its stability. If you are concerned about a boundary tree in the Oxted area, our reliable team can carry out the work to proper arboricultural standards. We pride ourselves on being considerate to all our clients and their neighbours.
